Let’s Get Naked

Not literally naked, or naked in a naughty way.  Geez, this is a family-friendly blog, for crying out loud.  What I’m talking about is a naked, or bottomless portafilter.  I think that most of you won’t have any idea what this is so here’s a picture for you:

The portafilter in the background is your standard one, while the one in the foreground is the naked one.  It’s mainly a great training tool to show how all the components of coffee are being done by you, the barista.  If it’s perfect it is a beautiful thing. If it’s not perfect, watching the extraction is still pretty cool.  Here’s an example a decent shot being pulled (not mine) :

So, this is my latest adventure.  With the help of Enoch, also of Geekinese fame, we modded my portafilter this last weekend with relative ease and sweet results.  This weekend we are upgrading the steamwand.  So the rule of the day seems to be tweakers taking over.  I’ll let you know how it goes…
